An early pregnancy scan, also known as a dating scan or viability scan, is a medical ultrasound used to check the baby’s development in the first trimester. It is usually recommended for expectant parents who seek reassurance about their pregnancy or those who have a medical history that requires early monitoring.
This scan can be performed in two ways:
- Transabdominal Scan: The ultrasound probe is moved over the abdomen using a gel to create images of the baby. This method is more effective after 8 weeks of pregnancy.
- Transvaginal Scan (TVS): A small probe is inserted into the vagina for a clearer and more detailed image, especially if the scan is done earlier (between 6-8 weeks).
